September is one of my favourite times of year. It is a time of change, endings and new beginnings – a great time to be setting goals for yourself.

A bit like being in your 50’s really! A maelstrom of change hits you along with an impatience to ‘just get on with it’.

As well as marking the end of the summer September is the beginning of the farming year.

Plans and preparations have been made – seed ordered, labour organised, machinery serviced, fuel stocked up, soil analysed and the land harrowed, ploughed and fertilised ready for next year’s crop.

Much of the work to guarantee a good crop has been done, way before the plant bursts through the soil.

I have spent 25 years living on a farm and see lots of similarities between the way farmers get good crops and people getting the results they want in their life.

Farmers can’t control the weather, or prices, but they adapt and change as they go along, knowing what they can and can’t control, to optimise their chances of a successful crop.

But what about you? What do you want to be, do or have in the next 3 months and beyond? What groundwork do you need to do? What plans and preparations do you need to make?

If you are anything like me, you do not have the energy or time to waste setting goals that you won’t achieve.

You probably know how soul destroying it is to keep trying to achieve something and failing, despite really wanting to feel different and working hard to make something happen.

So, I have learned. When something doesn’t work out it is not because you don’t want it badly enough, or haven’t visualised it clearly enough, or need to know how to do ‘stuff’ better, it is because you have blocks getting in my way that need to be sorted out.

“Working with Linda identified several reasons why I felt like I did and we managed to dismiss a few demons along the way. Becoming aware of why I acted and felt a certain way was like a light going on and I gained a better understanding of some of the behaviours and blocks I had that weren’t good for me….I’m much more assertive and as a result of that, I’ve changed my job, I have much less guilt and stress in my life and I’m so much happier. I would recommend having a chat with Linda, even if life is ok at the minute!”

So, what do you want to be, do or have?

Follow these 5 steps and make your goals happen.

Consider your mindset. What would you have to believe, feel or think before you could achieve it? However much you want something, and despite everything you do your inner blocks will win out in the end. You need to attend to your lack of self belief, low self esteem, doubts and fears.

Prioritise yourself. If you have been focused on other people and making their lives easy and happy, for a long time, it is difficult to focus on yourself. Make sure you diary time for yourself and you are kind and flexible towards yourself.

Want do you want to be, do or have? You may only know what you don’t want. Knowing what you do want to feel happy and fulfilled is not always easy to identify, but being really clear about this is one of the main keys to success.

Find your why. Why do you want to change? Who else will benefit? Why is this important to you? Knowing your ‘why’ will keep you motivated.

Get support and be accountable to someone. Did you know geese fly 72 percent further and faster when they fly in formation? You don’t have to do this alone! Being accountable and using a mentor keeps me on track, in my personal and business life.
