How long have you been doing what you do, and how did you become a Therapeutic Coach?
To answer this question, it’s probably best that I share with you a couple of defining moments, that brought me to where I am today – coaching people like you on exactly what to do to get rid of the old baggage – those limiting beliefs, negative emotions and inner conflicts – that you carry around and stop you from being you and living YOUR life.
I have had a couple of significant ‘so what!’/defining moments in my life when I felt low and dispirited because I wasn’t feeling happy and fulfilled, despite having a life that looked great from the outside.
Moving from beating myself up and trying to work out what was ‘wrong’ with me to the realisation that my negativity towards myself, my doubts and fears, were actually stopping me from trusting myself and being confident enough to make changes and be as happy on the inside as I appeared to be on the outside.
The first time it happened I had been on holiday in Eire, from my ‘BIG JOB’ managing a large Housing Department, providing a range of specialized accommodation with support. My job was innovative, hugely rewarding and exciting for many years and the work I was doing was making a massive difference to people’s lives.
As I landed at Stanstead Airport I had this voice in my head saying, “So what?” So, what that you are doing all this stuff…I realized that it wasn’t meaningful for me any more and I was feeling exhausted, resentful and always stressed.
Taking some time out from my regular routines, including swimming with a wild dolphin, had made those every day, ‘normal’ feelings and thoughts disappear and when I came home to my house, they flooded back and those negative feelings and thoughts, that I lived with permanently, that seemed entirely ‘normal’, suddenly became really uncomfortable and didn’t go back into their box as I resumed my ‘normal’ life.
Within a year I had given up the big job, moved out of London to the Suffolk countryside and did various part time jobs until I had completed my psychotherapy training. Over the next couple of years, I got married, had a baby and started my counselling and coaching practice that allowed me to do work I loved and found fulfilling, take care of my children and build a new life that fitted who I was at the time.
The next time was not such a clear defining moment. It was a sense of resentment, underlying stress and unhappiness, a feeling like I was living someone else’s life that built up over several years that I tried to ignore for a long time in the hope that it would go away. I spent a lot of time and money trying to ‘fix myself’. After all I should be happy. I had so much to be grateful for in my life:
- a job I love;
- two healthy children;
- an enviable lifestyle on a farm, eating home produced food;
- I was surrounded by beautiful countryside to ride through on my long dreamt of horse.
What was wrong with me?
Why wasn’t I grateful enough to be happy and content?
Why was I so unhappy?
Maybe it was the menopause, or that I needed to do more self-care?
Maybe I needed to attend to my spirituality or financial well being?
Lose weight, be fitter?
I set about fixing myself and keeping busy working and making sure that everyone else was happy. My confidence and self-esteem seeped away. I lost myself, felt depressed and weary. My efforts to ‘improve’ myself and mould myself and make myself fit in, just made me feel worse. But the more I looked, and the happier other people were, the more I realized that it wasn’t me who was the problem…. despite what other people thought.
Gradually I realized that there was nothing wrong with me or my situation, it just wasn’t right for me now. 25 years ago, it was my dream, and my children and husband were happy and content, but I had moved on and my situation hadn’t changed and wouldn’t change, whatever I did. I therefore had to change my situation and after 25 years I regretfully left my marriage, my home and the life that I had spent so long and invested so time and energy in to. I had ‘served my time’
This was now my time to thrive
Getting rid of my accumulated negative feelings about myself, has meant that I am now clear about who I am now, what is right for me and the people that I love.
Since then, I’ve worked with thousands of private clients, spoken in front of countless groups: I am creating my dream life – being happy in my skin, building my business and spending my time doing the things that I love with people I care for and care for me….and feeling good about myself.
Using all my professional skills as a psychotherapist, coach and small business owner, along with my own personal experiences of what works, I have since made a commitment to dedicate the rest of my professional life to helping other small business owners and women in their 50’s and beyond, to make the most of this time in their lives and have created a 3 month Programme and a One Day Intensive – based on the 6 steps you need to take and get rid of the blocks that keep you stuck or overwhelmed, replace those unhelpful beliefs and feelings so you feel happy in your skin, make the most of all the opportunities available to you and enjoy life.
